In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Mundos de Eufrásia , a novel that explores the impossible love between the visionary Eufrásia Teixeira Leite and the abolitionist Joaquim Nabuco, has been given a new edition revised by author Claudia Lage, with an unpublished afterword by Debora Diniz and a blurb by Maria Valéria Rezende.
In Eufrásia's Worlds , a novel that transcends the boundaries between reality and fiction, memory and imagination, Claudia Lage reveals the behind-the-scenes story of the turbulent, impossible love between two emblematic figures in Brazilian history: Eufrásia Teixeira Leite and Joaquim Nabuco. She, a woman ahead of her time, remained single throughout her life, inherited the family fortune and dedicated more than fifty years to managing and expanding its assets. He, a prominent 19th-century politician, diplomat, historian, jurist, orator, and journalist who fought for the abolition of slavery in the country.
Defying the standards of the time, Eufrásia was raised by her father, Joaquim José Teixeira Leite, to be the heiress and manager of his fortune. At a time when having only female descendants was synonymous with having none, Teixeira Leite made a point of grooming his daughter to take over the business and discouraged her from marriage, believing it could jeopardize her wealth.
After her father's death, Eufrásia took over the business and surprised everyone with her remarkable talent for managing and multiplying her inheritance, ensuring her economic emancipation in the midst of imperial Brazil. However, the desperate promise she made to her father on his deathbed—that she would never marry—constantly reminded by her sister, Francisca, exacted a heavy price. This decision profoundly impacted Eufrásia's relationship with the love of her childhood and youth, who, despite their ups and downs, was the great love of her life: Joaquim Nabuco.
Now, in a new edition revised by the author, with an unpublished afterword by anthropologist, researcher and essayist Debora Diniz and a blurb by award-winning writer Maria Valéria Rezende, Mundos de Eufrásia returns to us, readers, in order to, once again, sharpen the sparks of the imagination and take it to the various worlds in which this emblematic character of our history possibly lived, throughout her 80 years of life.
