Sinopse
At the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, eminent scientists are in turmoil: a meteorite dating back to before the creation of our solar system may be proof of the extraterrestrial origins of life on Earth. Old controversies resurface. Is man the accidental product of evolution or the fruit of a "higher design," that is, God's creation? To clarify matters, the museum's director calls on two experts: American paleontologist and geologist Peter Osmond, a staunch atheist and staunch opponent of creationism, and Italian Marcello Magnani, an astrophysicist sent by the Vatican. The museum's intrepid curator, Léopoldine Devaire, concerned about the sudden disappearance of a trunk inside the institution, assists the two in their work. However, shortly after his arrival, Peter Osmond makes a macabre discovery: biologist Anita Elberg is found in a dark room... horribly dissected. The French police open an investigation but make no progress. And, worse: for seven days, other murders continue to occur... Osmond, Magnani and Léopoldine decide to join forces to discover the truth and put an end to the barbaric acts that have shaken the institution.
