NIGHT IN PIGALLE tells the story of Fear, an English poet living in Paris. According to the author, Fear "is a poet in a somewhat brutal world, but if the world weren't brutal, poets wouldn't exist." Without a single penny in his pocket, he is perpetually mired in debt, owing money to friends and restaurants. Tired of defaulting, his bank manager, the deceitful Madame Jaffré, suggests he write something more "commercial... erotic perhaps" to alleviate his financial problems. Fear then embarks on a novel within a novel, about a girl from Pigalle and an American pilot. To write it, Fear imbues his characters with physical and emotional characteristics of himself. NIGHT IN PIGALLE is a delightful and sensual book. An original novel full of brilliant ideas.
