Adapted by soap opera author Maria Adelaide Amaral, Ó Abre Alas is a stage version of the book Chiquinha Gonzaga – Uma história de vida (Chiquinha Gonzaga – A Life Story), by Edinha Diniz, which tells the story of one of Brazil's greatest artists. Chiquinha Gonzaga was not only an avant-garde feminist, a woman in control of her own life, her own life, and her own sexuality—which, at the time, was completely unheard of—but throughout her long life she fought for every just cause, beginning with the abolition of slavery and culminating in the founding of the first copyright protection organization, SBAT (Brazilian Society of Playwrights), which survives to this day. May reading the play reveal who Chiquinha Gonzaga was and bring an understanding of Brazil, art, family, women, and love—in the past. So that prejudices are not repeated.
