Exclusive collection of short stories from the author of Lady Chatterley's Lover .
This exclusive collection includes the following short stories: " The Pastor's Daughters ," " The Thorn in the Flesh ," " A Shard of Stained Glass ," " The Prussian Officer ," and " The Gypsy ." The latter, which gives the book its title, is surprisingly lucid with the author's perspective, still in the 1920s. Through the story of young Yvette, the vicar's daughter, oppressed by her grandmother and aunts and pressured by the man who wants to marry her, Lawrence questions society's position. When the young woman breaks out of her routine and allows herself to develop feelings for a mysterious gypsy who crosses her path, her beliefs are challenged, and she realizes she is the protagonist of her own life.
Desire permeates all the stories, appearing as an important direction in the characters' lives. Lawrence portrays sex as something natural, part of the human essence, connecting man to nature, and therefore considered immoral by society at the time. His work, much deeper than the obscenity to which it was reduced at the time, also raises social questions and the contrast between industrialization and rural life and traditions.
Even though it was written at the beginning of the 20th century, DH Lawrence's work remains current and thought-provoking.
“DH Lawrence was always ahead of his time on gender issues and was very insightful about the sexual behavior of his characters.” – Andrew Harrison, author of The Life of DH Lawrence and director of the DH Lawrence Research Centre
