The Tenement (pocket edition)

A classic of Brazilian literature, considered one of the landmarks of Naturalism, in a paperback edition.

In 1890, Aluísio Azevedo published O cortiço , a novel that describes Brazilian society at the time with the rich and detailed description characteristic of this literary movement. The proletariat and social inequality are prominent presences in the work: the greedy and miserly Portuguese merchant João Romão, the hard-working Bertoleza, the wealthy neighbor Miranda, the lazy scoundrel Jerônimo, the clever Rita Baiana, all treated as an extension of the tenement, the main character, whose daily life is described throughout the narrative. This is the first great Brazilian social novel and one of the author's most important.
