At first, she wrote her diary solely for herself. However, upon hearing on the radio a member of the Dutch government suggest that diaries and letters documenting the German occupation be published after the war, she resolved that, as soon as the conflict was over, she would publish a book based on her diary. So she began rewriting it, improving the text, omitting some passages, and adding others.
After the residents of the secret annex were captured, secretaries working in the building found the diary. When the war ended, they handed it over to Otto Frank, who continued his daughter's wish, selecting her writings and organizing them into a more concise version of the diary, published in 1947.
After Otto's death, the Anne Frank Foundation, which he founded, decided to publish a new edition of the diary, giving readers a better understanding of the young woman's world. The task of compiling the texts and editing the expanded version fell to writer Mirjam Pressler. This version, known as the "definitive edition," is published exclusively in Brazil by Grupo Editorial Record.
