Sinopse

Anthology brings together Nietzsche's essential texts, commented by one of his greatest Brazilian experts

In *The Reader of Nietzsche* , an anthology edited by Oswaldo Giacoia Junior—one of the greatest experts on the thinker's work—the German philosopher's intellectual production is reconstructed and its integral parts interconnected. From the beginning, Nietzsche was considered a tragic thinker. And in this book, tragedy serves as the guiding thread for a reflection on his entire theoretical output.

It's curious to think that Friedrich Nietzsche, one of the most controversial, provocative, and influential modern philosophers, never had specialized training in philosophy. He opted instead for training in classical philology, which at the time encompassed knowledge of classical languages, archaeology, historical criticism, and the history of ancient philosophy, literature, and art. Despite a prolific intellectual output that left an indelible legacy in Western culture, Nietzsche was never celebrated in his lifetime. During his lifetime, as a teacher or writer, he never achieved significant success. His years of intellectual activity were also short-lived, considering that his first book—The Birth of Tragedy—was published in 1872, and in 1889, the thinker suffered a mental syncope that permanently deprived him of reason.

One of the main objectives of Nietzsche's theoretical production was the historical investigation into the origins of the fundamental moral values of Western culture. From this backbone, he ultimately drew a severe critique of the values enshrined by modernity. In the second half of the 19th century, he already pointed to our civilization's tendency toward a dynamic of power and domination, which sought to diminish the autonomy and authenticity of the human personality in favor of standardization and cultural uniformity. This occurred as modern man became subservient to an ideal of happiness that prizes comfort, well-being, security, pleasure, the absence of suffering, and so on.

His criticism anticipated central debates of the 20th century, such as those surrounding authoritarianism and totalitarianism, cultural modernism, and mass culture. The pioneering role of his work places him among the fundamental readings for every thinker on culture and society of our time.

Nietzsche's Reader is useful for those who want access to the thinker's monumental legacy and for those seeking a synthesis of his work. This volume is part of the Readers Collection, which aims to create a gateway to the work of fundamental theorists of social thought. Each volume consists of a selection of anthological texts by leading figures in global thought, organized by a Brazilian specialist. It also features an introductory text that includes a chronology, bibliography published in Brazil, selected fragments, and more.
