When literary agent Peter Katz receives a partial manuscript of the work titled The Book of Mirrors for review, he is immediately intrigued by the cover letter. In it, the author, Richard Flynn, recalls events that may be linked to the mysterious death of Joseph Wieder, a prestigious Princeton University professor, brutally murdered in his home shortly before Christmas in 1987—a notorious and still unsolved case. Upon finishing the book, Katz suspects that Richard Flynn wrote the book either to confess to the crime or to ultimately reveal who committed the violent murder.
But his suspicions can only be confirmed if he has access to the rest of the manuscript, and that proves impossible: the author is on the verge of death in the hospital and no one knows where the missing pages are.
Determined to find out how this story ends, Katz hires journalist John Keller to reconstruct the events of the time and write a true crime version of Flynn's memoir.
But Katz's determination, driven by the explosive potential of the case and the sales success that a book like this could achieve, ends up taking everyone involved into a game of mirrors, in which no one is what they seem to be, and in which the truth may be just a distorted reflection of reality - and much more dangerous and threatening than he could have imagined.
