The Book of a Thousand Days

A little-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm is reinvented in the steppes of Central Asia.

Lady Saren will be locked in a tower for seven years. The punishment, imposed by her father, is a response to her refusal to marry the groom chosen by her family. To the young woman, the long days of solitude seem more just than an eternity with a man she despises. But her isolation will not be total, as Dashti, her faithful servant, will voluntarily allow herself to be imprisoned to serve her and keep her company.

As the food supply dwindles—what isn't served ends up being devoured by rats—and the days go from unbearably hot to bitterly cold, all Dashti can do is keep her mistress fed and comfortable. Lady Saren's voluntary silence and constant tears become part of the monotonous dynamics of the days. The miserable servant's only true companions are the kitten My Lord and the pages of a diary.

With the arrival of two suitors for the noble girl, one very welcome and the other not so much, the young women will be confronted with hope and fear.
