Sinopse
José Maria Eça de Queirós (1845-1900), born in Póvoa de Vargem, is the most widely read Portuguese author and the one who has most interested other writers, with his humorous and elegant style that enchants with its truth and irony. Influenced by Flaubert, Zola, Baudelaire, Renan and other French writers, it can be said that Eça was in fact the introducer of literary realism and naturalism in Portugal. Best known for his novels The Crime of Father Amaro (1876), Cousin Basilio (1878), The Relic (1887), The Maias (1888) and The Illustrious House of Ramires (1900), he published The Mandarin in 1880, in which he narrates an episode full of fantasy and implausibility, focused with witty philosophy and reality.
