When Alice Salmon dies, the repercussions of her tragic drowning can be found in newspapers, on the internet, and in the hearts of her loved ones. The man who knows her best, however, is Professor Jeremy Cooke, an academic obsessed with understanding and accurately reconstructing Alice's existence from what she left behind: her diaries, text messages, and online presence. Cooke knows this reconstruction has become a life-consuming task.
