The Accursed Kings , a seven-volume series written by Maurice Duon and considered the contemporary model of historical romance, is the most famous account of a period in the 14th century.
France, 1314. After a long trial and at the behest of King Philip IV, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques de Molay, is sentenced to death by burning. This begins an era of curse in the kingdom of France that will last for thirteen generations of descendants of this king, also known as Philip the Fair for his legendary beauty, and the "Iron King" for his stern and just character.
Kings will die without heirs, Christendom will be deprived of a pontiff, and neighboring kingdoms will revolt against France. Everything will seem to indicate that the effects of the curse uttered from the flames are quite real.
However, it will be against Count Robert d'Artois that the Templar's curse will be fulfilled. Disinherited from his county since childhood, he harbors an early hatred for his aunt Mahaut.
Obsessed with regaining what he considers rightfully his, Robert d'Artois will not hesitate to bring to light slander to destroy his aunt and cousins, and to see the lands that belong to him restored.
With this, he managed to imprison the wives of King Philip IV's three sons and sentence the Knights of Aunay to death. This scandal, known as "the Tower of Nesle," would haunt the final years of Philip the Fair's reign.
