The book disappeared for a hundred years. His granddaughter, Tanya Tolstoy, worked to republish it in Europe in 1988, and included the following message in the edition: "I hope that many will read it and that reading it will help them live in our tormented times."

One of the great names in 19th-century Russian literature, Leo Tolstoy published the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina , works that established him in the literary world. In his later years, the writer became a pacifist, and his writings questioned the Church and forms of government, advocating a simple life in communion with nature.

Liev Tolstói

Liev Tolstói (1828-1910) nasceu em 1828, em Iásnaia-Poliana, na Rússia. Em 1843, iniciou o curso de letras e direito na Universidade de Kazan. Depois de formado, passou um período em Moscou e logo se alistou na guarnição do Cáucaso, seguindo o irmão, oficial do Exército russo. Seu primeiro livro, Infância, foi publicado em 1852 e alcançou grande êxito. Tolstói abandou a carreira militar na década de 1850 para viver em sua propriedade rural e dedicar-se à literatura. Em 1865, começou a escrever Guerra e paz, no qual aborda as guerras napoleônicas e traça um quadro da sociedade russa do início do século XIX. Com o passar do tempo seu interesse se voltou para a religião. Depois da publicação do romance Ressurreição, em 1899, Tolstói foi excomungado pela Igreja Ortodoxa Russa. O escritor considerava irracionais alguns dos conceitos mais caros àquela Igreja. Faleceu aos 82 anos, na estação ferroviária de Astapovo, após fugir de casa para isolar-se em um mosteiro. Um dos principais nomes da literatura russa, também é autor de Ana Karenina, A morte de Ivan Ilitch e A sonata a Kreutzer, entre outros.
