The meaning of training: Three studies on Antonio Candido, Gilda Mello e Souza and Lúcio Costa

This book analyzes the process of national cultural formation based on Brazilians' desire for their own literature, painting, and architecture. The authors' Marxist essayistic perspective allows us to grasp the consequences of the uneven and combined development that capitalism imposes on peripheral countries on Brazilian intellectual and cultural experience. In other words, *The Meaning of Formation* seeks to capture, by articulating localist and cosmopolitan perspectives, the way in which this historical-economic experience, simultaneously Brazilian and global, took shape in the field of aesthetics.
