The regrettable permanence of racism permeates the narrative of Scout, a sensitive child, daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch, who is responsible for defending a Black man accused of raping a white woman in Maycomb, a small town in Alabama, in the southern United States, in the early 1930s. The feelings surrounding Scout's family and town—ever since Atticus decided to take on the infamous case—are familiar to us: racial and social prejudice, conformity in the face of injustice, and the purest malice distilled into banal, familial relationships. Despite the raw humanity of these characters, Scout sees reality with the fresh eyes of a child and tells her story, leaving an unlikely trail of hope.

Scout narrates the routine of a peaceful rural environment, the summer vacation with her brother, Jem, and their best friend, Dill, the curiosity about the neighbors, the invented pranks, the adventures at school and family life.

The collection of small stories transports us to a place of apparent tranquility. However, this supposed relaxation turns to despair when we see the reaction of the people of Maycomb to the accusation against Tom Robinson.

To Kill a Mockingbird won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and spawned a film of the same name, which won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1962.
