His characters faithfully convey his thoughts on the city, being conceptually coherent. For Lerner, a place isn't as complex as those who ruin it want it to be. It's so simple that it can be translated into language accessible to children. "Adults sometimes speak in child-friendly language, not only so that children understand, but mainly so they feel like children themselves," he explains.
