A hilarious satire with a unique perspective on rural China.
Deep in the Balou Mountains lies a village inhabited by people with disabilities. Blind, deaf, paraplegic, and so on, the 197 residents of Avivada Village lead a peaceful life, led by Grandma Mao Zhi.
However, when a blizzard surprises everyone in midsummer and wipes out much of the year's harvest, county chief Liu Yingque decides to travel to Avivada to offer financial support to the local population. During this visit, he devises a plan that can raise money for the district and further his career.
Every year, after the wheat harvest, the villagers of Avivada hold a festival to showcase their special skills. Knowing this, and against Grandma Mao Zhi's wishes, Chief Liu convinces the villagers to form a troupe of performers, a sort of traveling freak show .
With the money earned from these performances, he plans to build a mausoleum and buy Lenin's embalmed body from Russia to attract tourists to his district. However, the success of the Shuanghuai County Special Abilities Performers Troupe comes at a much higher price than anyone can imagine.
