Following the teachings of Don Miguel Ruiz, the reader now has the opportunity to read a fine-tuned study by his son, Don Miguel Ruiz Jr., on the search for freedom and inner balance.
We are often governed by our attachments and beliefs, and being able to see beyond these filters we accumulate doesn't come naturally. Being trapped by our beliefs, our reality becomes rigid, stagnant, and oppressive. We remain tied to attachments because we lose the ability to recognize that we have the choice to be free. The stronger the attachment, the less we can see.
In The Five Levels of Attachment , Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.—son of Don Miguel Ruiz, author of the international bestseller The Four Agreements —presents five degrees of attachment we fall into throughout life. He also teaches how to overcome these obstacles to self-acceptance and inner balance, according to the teachings of the Toltec tradition.
- Level One: The Authentic Self
The essence of the Authentic Self is respected. Life is lived in harmony, without prejudice. Love and tolerance form the foundation of this level.
- Level two: Preference
The awareness of the Authentic Self remains, but there is the ability to connect to something that awakens emotion in the present moment, freeing oneself from attachment as the moment passes.
- Level three: Identity
The Authentic Self is left aside in the search for a socially appropriate identity. By forgetting one's own essence, one is afflicted by a mild suffering.
- Level four: Internalization
Attachment to knowledge increases, and domestication occurs, causing suffering not only to the individual but also to everyone around them. It's a level of great disharmony between body, mind, and soul.
- Level five: Fanaticism
Extreme and inflexible attachment to knowledge. Intolerance of opposing ideas is one of the main characteristics of this conservative level, which lives stuck in the past.
In The Five Levels of Attachment , Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. prepares the reader for a full, happy, and judgment-free life, according to the precepts of the Toltec tradition. The author asserts that this tradition is not a religion, but rather a way of life, for which the greatest masterpiece to be created by humanity is living with happiness and love.
In a simple way, Ruiz Jr. explains the influence of each level of attachment on our choices and shows how it is possible to free ourselves from dependence on beliefs and material possessions to achieve the freedom to see life through a new perspective, self-acceptance, and inner balance.
" The Five Levels of Attachment will help you become aware of how your attachments have been responsible for the reality you are living in and how your beliefs have been responsible for all the decisions in your life." – Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements
