LITERARY GENRES - Comedy, drama, tragedy, romance

The book "Literary Genres" aims to help readers recognize a work's genre. Where did this notion of genre originate? What specific traits allow us to identify the three major traditional genres (theater, novel, poetry)? What other genres or subgenres diversify and enrich this initial classification? How can we quickly distinguish between an essay and a novel, a poetry collection and a play, a fantasy narrative and a children's story? Literature, the art of language, has always felt the need to group diverse forms of discourse based on typological structures. In addition to sorting through the abundant works inspired by the notion of "genre," the book extracts from them some definitions and tools capable of helping and guiding students in their work on texts. According to Stalloni, reflection on genre should not fail to fulfill its primary task: to enable better reading and understanding of texts. The book is divided into: The Notion of Literary Genre; Theater and the Dramatic Genre; The Novel and the Narrative Genre; Poetry and the Lyric Genre; and The Fusion and Confusion of Genres. THE AUTHOR Yves Stalloni is a professor of modern literature, holds a PhD in literature, and teaches at the University of Toulon. He is the author of several works on methodology and literary criticism.
