Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah receive an unusual invitation: to spend the summer at the resort of a grandmother they've never met. Now, new letters, written with the same coldness, invite her three grandchildren to work and live at the family resort for the summer so she can finally meet them. Unsure if the best option for their vacation is spending time with near-strangers, the three hesitate. But their parents are emphatic: not going is out of the question.

The opportunity to win back their mother—and part of her fortune—is too great to pass up. Who knows, they might even be able to figure out what made her stop talking to anyone. After all, their parents swear nothing wrong happened to justify Mildred's behavior over twenty years ago. But when they arrive at Gull Cove Island, the cousins are in for a surprise: their grandmother doesn't seem all that pleased to see them.

The cousins settle into their jobs and get to know each other better, but it doesn't take long for them to begin to suspect a dark secret woven into the Story family's history. And the longer they remain on the island, the more they realize that whatever happened isn't over yet.
