The author creates stories that explore extreme situations, such as that of a son who cannot mourn his father's death or even pretend; and that of a waitress, in the short story that gives the book its title, who knows she is going to be murdered and decides not to run away; or that of a young man who discovers he has a disease that will lead to his death, but chooses not to seek treatment, in the novel "Aneurisma".
