On a U.S. Army base in Georgia, Private Ellgee Williams lives a solitary life. After two years of service, he falls in love with the beautiful Leonora, wife of Captain Weldon Penderton, after doing some gardening work for the couple. The captain and his wife have a tumultuous marriage due to a series of infidelities committed by Leonora. Her most recent fling is Major Morris Langdon, who lives near the Penderton home with his depressed wife, Alisson, and their Filipino butler, Anaceto. A closeted homosexual, Penderton finds himself drawn to the young soldier, Williams. Upon realizing that the object of his desire is obsessed with the unfaithful Leonora, he decides to take out all his frustrations violently on the young man. The result is a plot full of tension and unspoken truths. The second book by American author Carson McCullers, REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE is considered one of her best works. In 1941, the plot reached the cinema screens by director John Huston, with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando in the main roles.
