Sinopse
An elderly man, recently widowed, is at a New Year's Eve party with his deaf and mute son, who will be leaving the country the following morning. About to lose his role as a father, one of his last remaining, the old man plunges into deep reflection, seeking to find some meaning in life and death. This is the starting point of "New Year's Eve" and the reader's journey through the most diverse human experiences, in which human relationships with their fellow human beings and their environment are perceived through a critical and demystifying lens. From an everyday occurrence, such as a fight for a seat on the bus ("O lugar de cada um"), to the most dramatic moments, such as a couple's first moment alone after the woman has been raped ("Violentada"), the author provides us with a living testament to how human interactions can function in complex ways, distinct from those that appear on the surface. Literary language is another strength of the book. Notable examples include "Balas," narrated in the first person by an ex-convict, whose marginalized language and analytical power evoke a transposition of Guimarães Rosa's "The Simple Philosopher" into a modern urban environment. Another noteworthy short story is "Espiral," in which the pathological love between a mother and her son is narrated, as the title suggests, in circular movements that vertiginously approach a center of great dramatic concentration. The book concludes with "The Lamp That Never Burns," the story of a young man who invents such an object but sees his plans crumble in the face of market interests. The reader will end their journey not with a sad nihilism, but rather with the perspective that new paths can always be forged in the search for a fuller existence, of which love is a part.
