A regionalist novel by José de Alencar, one of the greatest highlights of Brazilian literature. Til is the nickname for Berta, an idealistic and generous girl, concerned with helping others. Set in the 19th-century São Paulo countryside, the plot, permeated by lyricism and romantic mishaps, also addresses social issues of the time, such as the treatment of slaves. With his original language, which strives to be truly Brazilian, Alencar constructs a romantic portrait of rural life, its customs, riches, and traditions. Til was initially published as a serial between 1871 and 1872, and its main themes are fragility, innocence, and love.
