Uses, abuses and challenges of civil society

This book presents a critical analysis of the new configuration of civil society and its role in the consolidation of democracy in four Latin American countries: Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. Bernardo Sorj, the book's organizer, emphasizes that after the end of authoritarian regimes, the role and place of civil society changed profoundly. Previously seen as homogeneous and virtuous, civil society diversified and became more heterogeneous and fragmented throughout the democratization process in Latin America. This diversification led to the emergence of various institutions and groups, including NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), the main focus of the book. The collected essays analyze the tensions and conflicts within the NGO universe and their relationships with political and private powers.
