A masterpiece of Portuguese Romanticism, "Viagens na minha terra" (Travels in My Land) was initially published in the Revista Universal Lisbonense in 1845. Almeida Garrett's innovative narrative, encompassing several genres, blends a novelistic plot with accounts of the author's 1843 trip from Lisbon to Santarém. The plot portrays the cultural, social, and, above all, political atmosphere of the country at the time, dependent on England, and intertwines with the story of Friar Dinis, Carlos, and their cousin Joaninha. The love between the two cousins seems unshakable, but external twists and a secret threaten to jeopardize the stability of their relationship. Furthermore, the work's characters take on political symbolism: Friar Dinis, representing the obsolete and absolutist Portugal, and Carlos, the liberal advocate of renewal. It offers a critical perspective on 19th-century Portuguese politics and society.
