Almost 50 years after its release, Bagagem, Adélia Prado's debut book, returns with a new cover to celebrate this great writer of Brazilian literature, winner of the Camões and Machado de Assis awards.

Few Brazilian authors had such a celebrated debut as Adélia Prado when she released Bagagem, her first book of poems, in 1976. It is enough to remember that the collection was effusively welcomed by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, who wrote about the poems of his fellow Minas Gerais native even before their publication in book form, beginning a relationship of mutual admiration.

Bagagem contains texts charged with emotions that, for Adélia, are inseparable from creation, though they often arise from suffering. Anchored in the author's experience, the book offers countless references, ranging from Guimarães Rosa to the Bible ("Everything is Bibles. Everything is Grande Sertão"), from theater to philosophy ("Life is much greater than death"). Religiosity also permeates many of the poems, reflecting the reality of life in rural Brazil. On several occasions, Adélia exposes the clash between the sacred and the profane, observed in small things in nature or even in the reading of a religious text.

The unique style of the poems not only reflects the slow maturation of a work conceived over four decades (Adélia was 40 when she published her debut book); it reveals a poet who is self-critical, patiently cultivated, and willing to take risks. This late debut reveals a rare balance: freshness and maturity, boldness and respect, uninhibitedness and humility.

Now, in time to celebrate the Camões and Machado de Assis awards, won by the author in 2024, Bagagem returns to readers with a new cover, designed by award-winning designer Leonardo Iaccarino, on the work Um segundo rio corre neste que todo mundo vê (2021), by visual artist Manoela Monteiro.

Adélia Prado

Adélia Luzia Prado de Freitas nasceu em 13 de dezembro de 1935, em Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, onde vive até hoje. Escreveu os primeiros versos aos 15 anos, logo após o falecimento da mãe. Completou o Magistério em 1953 e começou a lecionar em 1955. Em 1958, casou-se com José Assunção de Freitas, com quem teve cinco filhos. Antes do nascimento da caçula, a escritora e o marido iniciaram o curso de Filosofia da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Divinópolis, formando-se em 1973, um ano após a morte do pai. Poucos anos depois, enviou os originais de seus poemas ao crítico e escritor Affonso Romano de Sant’Anna. Este os submeteu à apreciação de Carlos Drummond de Andrade, que considerou os poemas “fenomenais” e indicou sua publicação a Pedro Paulo de Sena Madureira, da Editora Imago. Empolgado com o que leu, o editor decidiu publicar os originais, o que resultou no lançamento de Bagagem, no Rio de Janeiro, em 1976, com a presença de Antônio Houaiss, Raquel Jardim, Drummond, Clarice Lispector, Affonso Romano de Sant’Anna e Nélida Piñon, entre outros intelectuais e escritores. Desde então, a obra de Adélia Prado tornou-se um marco da literatura brasileira, abrangendo, além da poesia, também contos, romances, livros infantis e peça de teatro.

Vencedora de inúmeros prêmios literários – entre os quais, Camões, Griffin, Machado de Assis, Jabuti e Biblioteca Nacional –, Adélia Prado foi condecorada pelo Governo Brasileiro com a Ordem do Mérito Cultural em 2014.
