In 1942, Anne's father, Otto Frank, his wife, and daughters joined four others in hiding from the German invaders. For two years, they were confined to the attic annex of Otto Frank's office. In hiding, her diary was Anne's only instrument of freedom; in it, she chronicled life in the Secret Annex, the transformations and anxieties of each of those who lived there.
