Sinopse
Anthropologist Mirian Goldenberg, one of the most important figures in debates about relationships and gender differences in Brazilian culture, has also been studying aging since 2007. Now, she brings together articles by renowned national and international experts on the topic. "Body, Aging, and Happiness" critically addresses the subject and reveals the losses and, above all, the gains that come with aging for men and women. "The objective is to investigate how men and women experience, perceive, and process the bodily, cultural, social, or psychological changes that arise with the passage of time," explains the organizer. The reflections follow Mirian's line of research, which investigates changes in men and women between the ages of 50 and 90, belonging to the urban middle classes. The conclusions reveal negative aspects, including body dissatisfaction, loneliness, and the female fear of becoming "invisible," but also show benefits. Many believe that more important than losses are the gains, such as freedom associated with positive change, wisdom, acceptance, among others. The texts presented were produced for the international seminar that bore the same name as the book and took place at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 2010. Letícia Casotti, Yvonne Maggie, Maria Laura Viveiros de Castro and Jean-François Véran, among others, speak on the themes "Beauty Consumption and Aging"; "Color and Young and Old Bodies"; "Baianas and Velhas Guarda: Body and Aging in Rio's Carnival"; "Respect is Good and They Deserve It." Criticism and the need for transformation go hand in hand in this search for identifying the difficulties and the need for individual and social solutions and alternatives for the achievement of happiness for aging Brazilians.
