Jogo de Búzios: Um Encontro com o Desconhecido (Búzios Game: An Encounter with the Unknown) seeks to explain, for the first time, how the Jogo de Búzios process works in the Odù modality, based on traditions of Africans and their Brazilian descendants from the lineage of Bámgbósé Obitiko - Rodolpho Martins de Andrade - head of a clan that produced important and beloved characters in the history of Candomblé in Brazil.

The Cowrie Shell Game involves manipulating 16 cowrie shells, which the diviner shakes with cupped hands and throws onto a table previously prepared for this purpose. While doing so, they ask questions and converse with the deities, seeking answers to various doubts and situations. As they fall, the cowrie shells can assume one of two positions—open or closed—thus creating an Odu revealing the desired message.

The divination systems used, including the games of Ibò, Obí, Orógbó, and Búzios, are also clearly and easily explained. For each task, the author lists a series of observations to be followed with practical examples of how everything unfolds, making this work a pioneering contribution to the renewal of studies on the divinatory arts.

José Beniste

José Beniste é conferencista e autor de ensaios sobre os diversos cultos de raízes africanistas. Foi iniciado no Candomblé Ketu em 1984. Historiador, pesquisador e integrante de movimentos que visam à restauração da dignidade religiosa afro-brasileira, José Beniste mantém uma vasta documentação sobre a história do Candomblé no Brasil e demais segmentos religiosos, com literatura especializada e centenas de gravações e depoimentos. Esses depoimentos foram conseguidos através de seu programa radiofônico sobre as religiões afro-brasileiras, em 1970, e até hoje são referência para estudiosos do assunto.
