With On the Tightrope: Fictional Memoirs , the famous historian and researcher Daniel Aarão Reis makes his debut in fiction.
On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the 1964 military coup, Na corda bamba presents us with a fictionalized portrait of the experience of a generation of young people and of Brazilian society in the dark decades of the 1960s and 1970s.
Structured in three parts—"Dictatorship," "Exile," and "Return"—the narrative unfolds through short stories that follow the traumatic events of the period, featuring a diverse range of characters, both left-wing progressives and supporters of the coup. Set in Rio de Janeiro, Algiers, Paris, Santiago, Havana, and back in Rio de Janeiro, the stories portray, with sensitivity and often humor, the daily lives, experiences, and pains of these young people filled with ideology and dreams.
The book marks the author's literary debut and can be considered historical fiction, with many autobiographical aspects, as Daniel Aarão Reis was among the young people who resisted and fought against the coup. As former Minister of Education Renato Janine Ribeiro aptly wrote in the blurb, "Na corda bamba " "gives us this fortunate foray into fiction inspired by his vast life experience." It's a way to commemorate this difficult moment in Brazil's history.
