For the first time, Brazilian historians' impressions of world history will be brought together in the History of the 20th Century collection, being launched by Editora Civilização Brasileira. Comprising three volumes, the collection analyzes the formation of the modern world, bourgeois revolutions, and world wars. The 22 articles, written by 25 authors — Francisco José Calazans Falcon, Antônio Edmilson Martins Rodrigues, Edgar de Decca, Francisco Carlos Palomanes Martinho, Adriana Facina, Ricardo Figueiredo de Castro, Márcia Maria Menendes Motta, José Jobson de Andrade Arruda, Leandro Konder, Jorge Ferreira, Francisco Carlos Teixeira da Silva, Williams da Silva Gonçalves, Paulo G. Fagundes Vizentini, Enrique Serra Padrós, Maria Yedda Leite Linhares, Ana Maria dos Santos, Keila Grinberg, Marcelo Ridenti, Marco Antonio Pamplona, Octavio Ianni, Ciro Flamarion Cardoso, in addition to the organizers — also discuss socialist revolutions and fascisms, the crisis and reconstruction of liberalism, the proposal for the welfare state, the old European colonial empires and the struggles for national liberation, in addition to addressing the formation and disintegration of the socialist system, the Cold War and Third World utopias, globalization, and the challenges of the 21st century. The plurality of authors gives the collection different methodological approaches and perspectives, which favors debate and opinion formation. The first volume, THE 20TH CENTURY — The Time of Certainties: From the Formation of Capitalism to the First World War, covers the period from the European expansion of the late 19th century to the First World War. Edited by Daniel Aarão Reis Jr., Jorge Ferreira, and Celeste Zenha, volume I brings together six articles that trace the conquering expansion of countries that imposed their modes of production and trade, as well as their political organization, on the colonized world, resulting in the First World War. Comprising eight articles, volume II, THE 20TH CENTURY — The Time of Crises: Revolutions, Fascisms, and Wars, addresses the crisis of liberal capitalism, the construction of Soviet socialism, the emergence of fascism, and the Second World War. However, it also analyzes the emergence of the Cold War and the welfare state. In the final volume, THE 20TH CENTURY — The Time of Doubt: From the Decline of Utopias to Globalization, the starting point is the so-called history of the present time. The nine articles focus on four themes: the rise and collapse of the socialist system; conflicts, wars, and revolutions in the Third World; the present evil in capitalist societies that culminated in the turbulent year of 1968; and the survival of the nation state, globalization, the information revolution, and the challenges of the 21st century.
