The second volume of Colonial Brazil covers the years 1580–1720. It presents analyses of the Iberian Union, Dutch Brazil, wars, and territorial expansion. It addresses missionary activity and religiosity, as well as the sugar and mercantile economies. Also noteworthy are articles dedicated to the "land nobility" and "indigenous nobility," topics recently introduced into the historiographical debate.

The three volumes of the Colonial Brazil Collection bring together studies covering the long period between 1500 and 1808, from the Portuguese discoveries to the establishment of the royal family in Rio de Janeiro.
