Sinopse

Lya Luft's greatest success returns in a commemorative edition celebrating the publication's 20th anniversary, with a new preface by Fabrício Carpinejar.

More than a novelist, poet, columnist, and short story writer, Lya Luft is a literary genre unto herself. Losses and Gains , a narrative that moves between fiction, chronicle, and reflection, stems from a desire, first expressed in the award-winning The River in the Middle , to speak directly to the reader—in their ear, like an imaginary friend, who can hear her voice through the pages—about the existential dramas of human beings, themes intrinsic to her literary production: pain, death, sadness, but also hope, family, tenderness. The success of the nearly one million copies sold in Brazil and worldwide reveals the universality of her message, the scope of her sensitivity, and the astute understanding that this great writer possessed of the human condition.

According to Nélida Piñon, Lya Luft "adjusts to contemporary concerns, committing to what is visible and what eludes our scrutiny." In this commemorative edition of the 20th anniversary of the publication of Losses and Gains , Lya once again invites readers to share with her the experience of someone who has understood the web of losses and the succession of gains that make up the plot of our lives.

"What I write here is not mere daydreaming. I am a woman of my time, and I want to bear witness to it in whatever way I can: by unleashing my fantasies or writing about pain and perplexity, contradiction and greatness; about illness and death."

“An open, frank, powerful writing, speaking directly to the reader [...] Lya is universal to all ages.” - Fabrício Carpinejar, in the preface of this book.
