Sinopse

The Age of Revolutions, the first volume of Eric Hobsbawm's trilogy on the history of the modern world, returns to bookstores with a new cover and graphic design.

Between 1789 and 1848, two major transformations—one in France, the other in England—led the world into modernity. No other author documented the dual impact of the French and Industrial Revolutions as Eric Hobsbawm did in *The Age of Revolutions* . Along with *The Age of Capital* and *The Age of Empire *, this masterful work constitutes the first volume of his trilogy dedicated to the "long nineteenth century" and the origins of the modern world.

In this volume, the historian extensively addresses the major historical developments of the period and outlines the type of society produced by the double revolution. More than a chronicle of these events, this is a brilliant and original interpretation of phenomena that today seem to have unfolded naturally: the transformation of peasants into wage labor; the decline of omnipotent monarchies and the emergence of the liberal bourgeoisie; and the flourishing of new sciences, technologies, and ideologies. Ultimately, Hobsbawm shows his readers that the double revolution is, in this period, almost inconceivable in any form other than the triumph of liberal bourgeois capitalism.

The scope of the transformations addressed in The Age of Revolutions is broad and comprehensive: after the crisis of the Ancien Régime, the fall of the Bastille, and the emergence of the Jacobins, the Girondins, and Napoleon, the world was marked in the second half of the 19th century by the transposition of political revolution into the economic sphere. This was the period of the construction of the first railway network and the publication of The Communist Manifesto , which would have a lasting influence on the 20th century.

Written in a clear, direct and elegant style, The Age of Revolutions is already considered a contemporary classic, essential for understanding the world we live in.

The Age of Revolutions , The Age of Capital , The Age of Empires (...) all display the same astonishing set of qualities: synthesis; richness of detail; global scope, while also providing an acute insight into regional differences; fluency; power of analysis; and, furthermore, remarkable clarity and vividness.” – London Review of Books

“One of the most lucid, brilliant and courageous intellectuals of the 20th century.” – Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
