Eric J. Hobsbawam nasceu em Alexandria, no Egito, em 1917, e faleceu em Londres, na Inglaterra, em 2012. Foi educado em Viena, Berlim, Londres e Cambridge. Lecionou, na maior parte da sua carreira, no Birbeck College, da London University.
