As in The Workers (first published twenty years before this book), Hobsbawm presents a history of the working class not as an abstract expression of the labor movement, but as a history of the lived experiences of real people. The thematic focus is the formation and evolution of the working classes from the late eighteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Emphasis is placed on how the political organizations and ideas of labor movements took root in the daily lives of the working class. Hobsbawm divides the history of workers' relationship with society into three phases: the transitional phase, at the beginning of industrialization—when a class of workers with an independent vision and way of life emerged from the "working poor"; the phase of "separatism"; and the phase of relative decline of separation. This division will be important for understanding the issue of the labor aristocracy and the crisis of European trade unionism, two strong points of the book, alongside discussions on the forms of non-professional organizations of the lower classes and class consciousness.

Eric J. Hobsbawam nasceu em Alexandria, no Egito, em 1917, e faleceu em Londres, na Inglaterra, em 2012. Foi educado em Viena, Berlim, Londres e Cambridge. Lecionou, na maior parte da sua carreira, no Birbeck College, da London University. Entre seus livros, destacam-se os seguintes, publicados no Brasil pela Paz & Terra: A era do capital, A era dos impérios, Mundos do trabalho, Os trabalhadores, Revolucionários, A invenção das tradições e Bandidos.
