Sinopse

Malba Tahan

O escritor árabe Malba Tahan é o pseudônimo do brasileiro Júlio César de Mello e Souza. Nascido no Rio de Janeiro, em 1895, Mello e Souza formou-se em engenharia e foi nomeado professor do Instituto de Educação, onde lecionou Matemática, Literatura Infantil e Folclore, tornando-se professor catedrático. Seu primeiro livro intitulou-se Contos de Malba Tahan, e depois vieram Céu de Alá, Amor de beduíno, Lendas do deserto, Mil histórias sem fim e O homem que calculava. Nos anos 1940, Malba Tahan proferiu centenas de palestras, criou a Universidade do Ar — programa pioneiro de ensino à distância — e lançou as revistas Lilaváti e Al-Karismi. Opondo-se frontalmente ao “algebrismo” de sua época, foi precursor de uma nova forma de ensinar Matemática, escrevendo títulos como Matemática divertida e pitoresca e O escândalo da geometria. Além de contos orientais, livros infantis e recreações matemáticas, sua obra inclui livros didáticos, novelas e dicionários. Dedicou a vida à educação e morreu aos 79 anos em Recife, em 1974.
