Two women fight over one man. Two queens vie for power. And the future of England hangs in the balance.
Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, is one of the most controversial figures in history, seen at times as a passionate romantic and at times as a reckless manipulator. The other queen highlights Mary's years of captivity. Fleeing rebels in Scotland, she took refuge under the protection of her cousin, Elizabeth I, and ended up imprisoned in the household of George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, and his wife, Bess of Hardwick.
The story is told from the perspective of three very different characters: Bess, an intense and independent woman with a talent for managing assets and finances, who strategically considers her family's social advancement by hosting the queen; George, an honorable man and extremely loyal to Elizabeth; and Mary, Queen of Scots herself.
During the Queen of Scots' years of imprisonment, the narrators' dreams, convictions, frustrations, and hopes are revealed, against the backdrop of the great northern uprising, which aims to free Mary and return her to the throne of Scotland.
While the English lords, along with Spain, the Duke of Northumberland and the Northern Earls plot this conspiracy, which will be the greatest threat Elizabeth has ever faced, the great spy Cecil sets a trap for them all.
