One day, while working in the family hat shop, young Sophie is surprised and mysteriously cursed by a terrible witch, who transforms her into a ninety-year-old woman. Unsure of how to free herself from the spell and fearful of not being recognized by her sisters, Sophie runs away and ends up in a fantastical castle, commanded by the young and seductive Wizard Howl, whose reputation is for devouring the hearts of the town's young women. In the castle, where she begins to work, Sophie promotes a profound transformation, changing the habits of Michael, the apprentice wizard, and Calcifer, the fire demon responsible for the "magical life" of the place.

Besides trapping Sophie in the body of an elderly woman, the spell prevents Sophie from revealing that she's under a curse. Calcifer, who soon realizes what's happening, proposes that she help him free himself from the pact that binds him to Wizard Howl, offering, in exchange, help in breaking the Witch's curse.

As Sophie learns to cope with the insensitive and impetuous Howl in the unusual routine of the castle, she discovers a new world, full of magic and curses, witches and wizards, and – most importantly – meets a new and surprising version of herself.
