The place of the gaze

The True Geography of the Gaze, by Paulo Cesar da Costa Gomes, is an invitation to the spatial interpretation of images and the phenomenon of visibility itself and, above all, a stimulus for the reader to reflect visually on places, recovering the sense of observation. In this way, he makes visible that which would otherwise go unnoticed. Through short accounts of the evolution of geography, the history of art, architecture, urbanism, and modern urban life, the author leads the reader to explore and analyze representations—spatial visualization devices—that, thus assembled, allow them, little by little, to unravel the complex web that conditions perception and contingency, the understanding of what presents itself to the gaze. The Place of the Gaze is based on the hypothesis that what is seen and how it is seen depends, in large part, on where one's gaze is situated.
