Jane Austen nasceu em 1775, em Steventon, na Inglaterra, e morreu em Winchester, em 1817. Sua profunda compreensão do universo feminino e seu domínio da forma e da ironia ﬁzeram dela uma das mais notáveis e inﬂuentes escritoras de sua época, considerada pela crítica a primeira romancista moderna da literatura inglesa. Northanger Abbey e Persuasão foram publicados postumamente, em 1818. Apesar de suas heroínas românticas estarem sempre às voltas com o casamento, Jane Austen nunca se casou.
