One of Brazil's most memorable playwrights and soap opera writers, Bahian Dias Gomes wrote his first play at age 15—never staged, but winning an award at the National Theater Service Competition in 1939. His theatrical activity spanned the 1940s to the 1980s, with his first work staged in 1942, produced by Procópio Ferreira and censored by the Estado Novo. After this, Dias Gomes wrote nearly thirty plays. Among his most famous is *The Promise Payer *, which was translated into 12 languages and adapted for the screen in 1962 by Anselmo Duarte, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Featuring typically Brazilian characters, Dias Gomes's writing is marked by sociopolitical themes and religious criticism, as well as advocating for freedom and opposing oppression. Elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1991, Dias Gomes left a legacy as extensive as it is precious for the field of literature in Brazil.
"Dias Gomes knew how to portray, like few others, the life of rural people, or even a cemetery that took a long time to be populated, with aspects of the human species, focusing on a discourse that soars with inventiveness, magic, and high-voltage communication. He rightly believed that the popular, when understood from the soul, also reached the magical. And in the magical, the romantic and poetic." - Carlos Nejar
