Luiz Antonio Simas é mestre em história pela UFRJ, professor e escritor. Com diversos livros publicados, recebeu o Prêmio Jabuti – Livro do Ano pelo Dicionário da história social do samba, em parceria com Nei Lopes. Juntos, os dois escreveram também Filosofias africanas. E, com Alberto Mussa, publicou Samba de enredo: história e arte. Pesquisador das culturas e religiões populares, Simas é autor de O corpo encantado das ruas e Umbandas: uma história do Brasil.
