Sinopse

Originally published in 1964, Industrial Entrepreneur and Economic Development in Brazil deals with the formation of the “entrepreneurial spirit” and its contribution to the country’s economic development.

Seeking to understand economic development and the conditions that could be found in the country, Industrial Entrepreneur and Economic Development in Brazil considers the formation of the “mass” industrial society and the formation of the “entrepreneurial spirit” for the formation of the country.

In the first part of the book, the author assesses some theorists' views on industrial capitalist society. He distinguishes the role of entrepreneurs during the formation of capitalism from their role during the era of large "joint-stock companies." He also shows that entrepreneurs in underdeveloped societies differ, in mentality and action, from those who operated in the early period of capitalism's formation and those who are part of developed capitalism. The book also shows that so-called "traditional producers" act differently from innovators. Economic growth is not seen as an automatic consequence of "accumulation," since it arises from the actions of historical subjects: entrepreneurs.

The second and final part of "Industrial Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Brazil" presents a more complex view of Brazilian society, avoiding binary oppositions. It emphasizes the role of the middle and working classes in "driving" development, which could come from "outside" the economic sector: from the intelligentsia and the military, which at certain historical moments drove the country's growth.
