Sinopse

Translated by the acclaimed Lya Luft and with a foreword by Marco Lucchesi, Felicidade brings a series of reflections by Nobel Prize winner for Literature Hermann Hesse on his daily life and the craft of writing.

An author reflecting on everyday life and the craft of writing. This is the Hermann Hesse of Happiness . In these short stories—or reminiscences—we find the author at his desk reading letters from his readers, sometimes melancholic, funny, or witty; in his garden, wearing shabby clothes, receiving the French author André Gide; or reflecting on the meaning of certain words, such as happiness, or on the reason he used a particular expression in a work written over 25 years ago, which leads him to reflect on his strict religious upbringing.

Written between 1947 and 1961, these stories show a mature Hesse preparing to face the idea of death; a humanitarian Hesse, who made small personalized books with poems and drawings, the sales of which would be used to help people in countries at war: for him, each line or word represented a plate of food or medicine for the hungry and sick. In "Happiness ," we see the author's home, the small rooms, the landscape from his window, the flowers, his cat, the cupboard filled with different types of paper that, more than just raw materials for his works, were portraits of his state of mind: one day rough, the next smooth; sometimes white, then yellowed or colored.

In this anthology of short texts, we witness, in prose and verse, the author address a topic that was particularly dear to him, but which also concerns each of us. Who hasn't wondered if they are happy, or if they ever were? And who hasn't struggled to define what happiness means to them?

Sobre o autor

Hermann Hesse
