Sinopse
This book is an attempt at a modern interpretation of Christianity, from the perspective of the Virgin. Memorial of the Virgin presents Christianity for our times. It is an attempt to unravel a mystery—how a religion born of a preacher from a subjugated people, neither noble by birth nor important among the powerful, remains fully active. He also had no philosopher or great thinker among his friends and associates. His disciples were fishermen, tax collectors, and a few women. The highlights of this love story are the Baptist, Yokanaan, the Forerunner – “the tragedy of trust in the invincible frankness of humanity”; Mary Magdalene, from a Hellenistic family and Greek culture; and Peter and John – the leader who vacillates and the mystic who loves and is loved. The book also reflects on a question pertinent to all Christians. Why has the crucifixion of Jesus—a punishment intended to punish heinous crimes—been interpreted, in the art of different centuries and countries, as the "Glory on the Cross"? Another reflection the author proposes is how the Nazarene's life can give meaning to John Donne's well-known meditation?
