Republican Brazil: The Time of National-Statism (Vol. 2)

Second volume of the most important collection on the Republic in Brazil in a revised edition.

In the first decades of the 21st century, themes such as democracy, citizenship, and the Republic emerged, in varying interpretations, as dilemmas and challenges that Brazilian society faces in its daily life. Sharing these concerns, we planned and organized the collection "O Brasil Republicano" (Republican Brazil), in five volumes: "The Time of Oligarchic Liberalism" (revised edition), "The Time of National-Statism" (revised edition), "The Time of Democratic Experience" (revised edition), "The Time of Authoritarian Regime" (revised edition), and "The Time of the New Republic" (new volume).

This second volume of the collection O Brasil Republicano deals with the Second Republic.

The year 1930 ended with a revolution and a provisional government. From then on, several political projects vied for power in the country. The most active and influential at the time tried to assert themselves, resorting to arms, but were defeated: the liberals in 1932, the communists in 1935, and the integralists in 1938. The Constitutional Government gave way to the Estado Novo dictatorship. The Vargas administration encouraged the country's industrialization, sponsored a cultural policy that resonated with artists and intellectuals, and elevated workers to the status of central figures in the regime. In 1945, as the authoritarian regime faded, the country was a different place.
