Sinopse

Fourth volume of the most important collection on the Republic in Brazil, in a revised edition.

In the first decades of the 21st century, themes such as democracy, citizenship, and the Republic emerged, in varying interpretations, as dilemmas and challenges that Brazilian society faces in its daily life. Sharing these concerns, we planned and organized the collection "O Brasil Republicano" (Republican Brazil), in five volumes: "The Time of Oligarchic Liberalism" (revised edition), "The Time of National-Statism" (revised edition), "The Time of Democratic Experience" (revised edition), "The Time of Authoritarian Regime" (revised edition), and "The Time of the New Republic" (new volume).

This fourth volume of the Republican Brazil collection deals with the Fourth Republic.

As a way to better tell the story and bring together accounts from different perspectives, this edition provides a little more information about the country's dictatorial era and its impact on society at the time. The military, alongside their civilian allies, seized power in March 1964 and established a dictatorship that lasted 21 years. To achieve this, the regime resorted to violence, censorship, and espionage. Although many achieved more prosperous living conditions with the "economic miracle," many others became even poorer and saw their lives made even more difficult.

Even during the generals' rule, there were opponents, such as politicians, religious figures, students, artists, and intellectuals. However, it was the youth of the time who, eager to establish socialism in Brazil, took up arms and fought the dictatorship. The transition back to democracy, like the duration of military rule itself, was too long. Eventually, workers entered the scene, soon followed by rural workers. And Brazil discovered the advantages of being Latin American.

The book's significance lies not only in its subject matter and remembrance of times past, but also in its ability to reveal situations and moments that occurred throughout the years of military repression. For fans of politics, history, and literature, this volume promises to be a faithful contributor to their understanding of national politics in bygone eras.
